Dimensions Task Settings – Complete Guide

Selection Mode :computer_mouse:

Choose how you place dimensions:

  • By View :framed_picture: – Creates dimensions in your selected views for the specified element categories
  • By Line :pencil: – Draw lines interactively to place dimensions directly in the active view. Released in Glyph 0.8.2.0.

:bulb: Tip: Use By Line for quick, precise placement when you need fine control.

References :straight_ruler:

A reference is the specific point or edge on an element that the dimension line connects to. Different element types offer different reference options:

Family Instance References (Furniture, Equipment, etc.) :couch_and_lamp:

  • Left / Right – Side edges of the family
  • Center Left Right – Centerline between left and right
  • Front / Back – Front and back edges
  • Center Front Back – Centerline between front and back
  • Bottom / Top – Vertical edges
  • Center Elevation – Vertical centerline

Wall References :brick:

  • Wall Center Line – Geometric center of the wall
  • Core Center Line – Center of the structural core
  • Finish Face Exterior/Interior – Surface faces
  • Core Exterior/Interior – Structural core edges

System References :gear:

  • Curve References – For grids, levels (line geometry)
  • Perimeter References – For floors, ceilings (edges)
  • Center Line – For MEP elements (ducts, pipes)

:warning: Important: Some categories allow multiple reference selection (walls, doors, windows, family instance categories (air terminals, lighting fixtures etc)), others are single selection (grids).

Category Selection Structure :card_index_dividers:

Organize what gets dimensioned in two ways:

  • Individual/Single Categories – Configure each category separately
  • Dimension Groups – Combine multiple categories with shared settings. Released in Glyph 2.6.

Dimension Group Settings :knot:

Unlock advanced strategies when you group categories.

Dimension Grouping Strategy

See release notes for more details.

  • :artist_palette: Compose Dimensions“Stack dimensions by layer”
    Control:
    • Order of dimension types
    • Spacing between layers
    • Which options are included from each category
Great for complex plans (e.g., walls, grids, structural) in clean, layered strings.
  • :link: Combine Categories“Merge categories into one dimension when possible, based on group proximity and selected references”
Produces unified strings for cleaner drawings with fewer lines.

Group Settings Explained :hammer_and_wrench:

When using Combine Strategy:

  • Automatically applies Group by Proximity & Direction to all categories in the group

When using Composer Strategy:

  • Each category keeps its own grouping settings
  • Full control over layer order and spacing

If Compose is selected:

  • Organize layers (drag & drop, toggle per layer)
  • Set Offset Between Layers (measured in project units)

Individual Category Settings :puzzle_piece:

Reference Selection

  • Single Selection – Most categories (walls, grids, levels)
  • Multiple Selection – Family instances can use multiple reference planes

Element Grouping Strategy :ladder:

Released in Glyph 2.2.

  • Individual Dimensions – Separate dimensions per element
  • Group by Proximity/Distance – Groups nearby elements within a distance tolerance
  • Group by Reference Direction – Groups aligned elements using direction tolerance
  • Group by Proximity & Direction (Recommended) – First proximity, then direction for smarter results

Tie Conditions – Connect Your Dimensions :link:

Control how strings connect to other elements:

  • None – Standalone dimensions
  • All: Tie to the Nearest Grid – Extends to closest grid line
  • All: Tie to All Grids Intersecting – Includes all intersecting grids
  • Plan: Tie to the Nearest Joined Wall – Connects to adjacent walls
  • Plan: Tie to the Nearest Grid and Joined Wall – Combines both
  • Elevation: Tie to All Levels Intersecting – Includes intersecting levels
  • Elevation: Tie to All Intersecting Grids and Levels – Maximum connectivity
  • Elevation: Tie to Hosted Level – Connects only to the hosting level. Released in Glyph 2.6

:warning: Important: Tie conditions are view-type specific (Plan vs. Elevation vs. Section).

Wall-Specific Settings :brick:

Wall Location Reference

Plan Views:

  • Wall Center Line
  • Core Center Line
  • Finish Face Exterior/Interior
  • Core Exterior/Interior

Elevation/Section Views:

  • Wall Height and Openings
  • Mullion Width/Centerline

Wall Dimension Options

  • Interior Walls – Internal layout dimensions
  • Exterior Rough Openings – Opening sizes & positions
  • Exterior Length & Center Openings – Overall length with centered openings
  • Overall Exterior Wall Length – Building perimeter
  • Overall Building – Complete outline
  • Curtain Wall – Panel & mullion dimensions
  • Wall Height and Openings – Section-view dimensions

Category-Specific Options :card_file_box:

Grids :triangular_ruler:

  • Overall – Spanning between grid lines
  • Individual – Bay-by-bay dimensions

Structural Elements :building_construction:

  • All Elements – Dimension everything
  • Aligned Elements Only – Only aligned members

MEP Elements :wrench:

Released in Glyph 2.3

  • To Datum Grid – From equipment to nearest grid
  • Length – Linear element dimensions

Doors & Windows :door:

  • Openings – Size and position within walls

Distance & Style Settings :artist_palette:

Distance Controls :straight_ruler:

  • Dimension Offset – Distance from elements to the dimension line
  • Grouped Proximity Distance – Threshold for grouping nearby elements
  • Grouped Direction Tolerance – Alignment tolerance for directional grouping
(All values use your project units automatically.)

Style & Behavior :gear:

  • Dimension Style/Type – Choose the appearance
  • Auto Collision – Prevent overlapping dimensions
  • Group Dimensions – Maintain dimensional relationships
  • Custom Datum Grids – Select specific grids for tie conditions

Best Practices & Workflow Tips :light_bulb:

Professional Results :trophy:

  • Start with Composer for complex plans
  • Use Proximity & Direction grouping for family instances
  • Set Tie Conditions to match your standards
  • Tune offsets to avoid overcrowding

Efficiency Boosters :rocket:

  • Enable Auto Collision to prevent overlapping

Troubleshooting :hammer_and_wrench:

Q: Dimensions aren’t grouping as expected?
A: Check proximity and direction tolerances.

Q: Too many grid lines included?
A: Use Custom Datum Grids to limit grids in tie conditions. (MEP categories only)

Q: Dimension layers too close together?
A: Increase Offset Between Layers in Composer strategy.

Q: Family instance references not working?
A: Verify the family has the reference planes you’re targeting in the Family Editor.

Q: Doors/windows not dimensioning correctly?

  • Center of Door/Window – Creates single centerline dimension
  • Rough Openings – Creates left and right edge dimensions

Q: Wall dimensions missing?
A: Check Wall Dimension Options and Wall Location Reference compatibility.

Q: MEP elements not showing?
A: For ducts/pipes using To Datum Grid, set Tie Conditions to nearest grid.

Q: Grouped categories not combining properly?
A: Combine strategy auto-sets proximity/direction — try Composer for more control.

Q: Elevation dimensions not working?
A: Ensure Tie Conditions are set to Elevation options, not Plan.
