I’m trying to created a series of 3D Views by level and hitting a brick wall.
If I create a new blank task to create views, 3D View doesn’t show up as an option. If I add in one of the Library tasks to modify it (Create by Level & Scope Box) I can’t remove Scope Box as a required option. Selecting a scope box works as expected, creating a 3D view with that scope box as the extents.
Is there a way to create a 3D View by level without requiring other inputs such as Rooms or Scope Boxes?
Good question! You cannot create a 3D view using the “Create Views by Level” task. However, as you mentioned, it is available for Rooms and Scope Boxes.
This is the first time I’ve seen someone want to create 3D views based on levels. May I ask what the use case is? This will help us add it to the backlog.
In this instance I’m working on a large residential tower and having a view for each level would theoretically make QA/QC on the floors a bit easier. Things like looking for missing soffit walls, checking wall heights, adjusting walls around the structure (angled columns, drop caps, shafts), etc. Plus manually creating 90+ 3D views and adjusting the section boxes would take forever- hence I haven’t done it
Admittedly this is the first time in almost 20 years I’ve wanted to automate creating 3D views like this, but it is also the first time I’ve worked on something this tall. I believe there are a few more towers in our project queue, so it would be useful with those jobs as well.
I could also see this being useful on renovation jobs and/or jobs with odd level configurations. I worked on a church a few years ago that was 4 buildings built over 150 years and none of the levels aligned by multiple feet. Being able to quickly look at an area to understand what is happening is obviously pretty handy.
I guess the alternate version would be a way to automate creating a scope box per level, then creating the views that way? Currently that would require manually creating the scope boxes, or using Dynamo.
